Movado Watches
Swiss watchmakers Movado have been manufacturing watches since 1881, and their timepieces are well renowned for being incredibly luxurious. The name Movado is Esperanto of origin, and means “always in motion” or “movement” to be more literal.
Movado was founded by a young entrepreneur called Achille Ditesheim, of whom hired only six watchmakers of whom created their masterpieces in a small workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, in Switzerland. Since its creation the company has created several of the world’s most famous watches. They include: “the 1912 Polypan, it’s revolutionary, patented movement constructed on three planes to fit a case curved to follow the wrist…the WW1 Soldier’s Watch with its elegant, protective grill…the 1927 Ermeto, a capsule-shaped pocket watch wound by the sliding motion of its case…the innovative 1950’s Kingmatic series of rotor-driven automatics…the Movado Artist’s Series by luminaries of the fine art world…and the Movado Museum Watch with it’s legendary dial”. In 2006, Movado launched a magnificent collection of watches that would commemorate 125 years of design innovation. The watches were unique in the fact that whilst most standard watches highlight the numbers 3, 6, 9 and 12 on the face, the 125 Years Collection highlighted the 2, 3 and 5 digits, with the word “Movado” replacing the 9 on the watch face.
Movado has always had strong connections with the art industries, from working alongside world-famous artists such as Andy Warhol, to the erection of the incredible bronze clock, titled the “Movado TimeSculpture”, that has been a huge feature at the Lincoln Centre since 1999. The clock was created by Philip Johnson, a world famous architect. Movado also sponsors many arts centres, including the Lincoln Center, and the School of American Ballet.
Mamma Mia actor Amanda Seyfried and tennis-player Pete Sampras are both Movado Brand Ambassadors.
